Men are usually perceived as “strong, fearless, unwavering” which results to most men bottling their emotions and feelings, but depression and different mental health issues hit them too. This month of November, Movember encourages men out there to talk, ask, listen, encourage action and check in with their mates.

75% of suicides in Australia are men. Mental Health issues can be treated successfully if we are informed and aware of the strategies and techniques that can help. Everybody struggles at some point in their lives and knowing that you’re not alone sparks hope and reduces the risk of suicide. The key is to reach out. Talk to a mate, colleague or family member that you trust and there’s always professional help available.



Mental Health Awareness

Mental health issues are serious, it causes a man’s life and it can also come from all walks of life.

Nic Newling shared his experience when he was only 14 years old. Nic’s brother took his own life when he was 18, Nic was able to see the difference between him and his brother. He talked a lot about things while his brother didn’t. After his brother died things got worse with Nic and he ended up in an ICU unit of a psych ward.

Nic was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. According to his doctor, “In my experience, people with bipolar rarely complain about the highs, which, I guess, is one reason why it’s so hard to diagnose.” After Nic started taking the right medication for his diagnosed illness, his mood and his life finally started to change. In Australia, the average time between the onset of bipolar symptoms and a diagnosis is 10 to 20 years and sadly, many people never get a diagnosis at all. After what happened to Nic, he decided to help people facing the same illness and also help other people understand their illness.

  • eat well
  • get plenty of sleep
  • exercise regularly
  • spend time with your friends and family
  • talk about how you feel with people you trust
  • do activities you enjoy
  • take time to relax

  • unemployment or retirement
