This month, Reduce Home Loans will be showing our support to those diagnosed with epilepsy. March is Epilepsy Awareness Month, an initiative supported by Epilepsy Australia where members of the public can engage in fundraising activities, donating and show support families affected by the disorder.

What is it?

A common brain function disorder that can develop at any life stage; regardless of age, gender and heritage. It takes the form of spontaneous yet recurring convulsive or non-convulsive seizures. Around 4% of Australians will develop this at some point in their lives.

However is not just one condition; the term Epilepsy rather comprises of multiple seizure types linked to a family of brain disorders.

What causes it?

The multiple strands of disorders point toward a number of causes, though in 50% of cases the actual cause is unknown.

Identified causes include

  • Brain injury
  • Lack of oxygen after birth
  • Brain infections
  • Brain tumors
  • Degenerative diseases e.g. Alzheimer’s disease
  • In diagnosis for very young children, genetic history

The Epilepsy Foundation is continuing research to help assist medical practitioners in identifying further causes to this disease.

Is there a cure?

Unfortunately, no. Today it’s treated with medication that can reduce the severity or frequency of epileptic seizures. Regular medication and treatment only affects about 80% of those with epilepsy; which means 20% are not helped by medication.

How can I help?

You can donate to Epilepsy Australia or the Australian Epilepsy Research Fund to help scientists and researchers find a cure and more effective treatments.

You can join your community or social groups in fundraising efforts to help support families affected by the disorder and further contribute to research.
